Day 43 - 2/9/11 - Friday- Split- Dubrovnik

Driving down the Dalmatian coast is probably one of the world's best coastal drives, and I type this whilst keeping one eye on the scenery, and wishing I too was cooling off in the water, and enjoying the sun's rays. For unlike Amsterdam and Copenhagen, this is Croatia, hence it is sunny.

With rocky jutted mountains on one side, and placid beautiful torquise water on the other side, it is indeed nice to look out the bus window. Pleasingly, the bus window is large, unscratched, and streak free. There are houses all along the coast thus far, with the occassional bigger built up township, and adjacent small sized harbour. It must be such a tough life living here!

Cinthia and I had wanted to hire a car, however the supposed cheap daily rates were anything but when the fine print was included. Drop off fees, and 3 day minimum hire were suddenly conditions to take the car to Dubrovnik, and hence it is the bus for us. As far as buses go, it is fairly comfortable and clean.
Most Victorians know the Great Ocean road to be windy. True, however this coastal road is 2-3 times more windy, so as soon as the bus straightens the front wheels go turning again. A good road for Casey Stoner to practice his cornering, however he wouldn't want to miss a corner, as we increasingly climb up the mountainface.

Time to sitback, relax, enjoy the scenery, and await the arrival of Dubrovnik to the buses motion.

Sometimes an offer that seems too good to be true is, and therefore one should tread carefully prior to taking up the offer. Unfortunately for Cin and I, we believed the seemingly nice saleswomen when she said her accomodation was a 20 minute walk to Old Town. The car ride there was the first indicator that it might be a little further, however at that stage we didn't exactly know where the Old town was. Post dinner toward old town we walked, and walked, and walked some more. The Proclaimers might have been prepared to walk a long way, however we weren't, and after 50 minutes and finally approaching old town we saw an accomodation sign, checked availability, and told them we'd be back with our luggage.

We taxied it back to our current accomodation, packed, and did the walk out. When the old man said "This is not right", we replied "No, telling tourists your accomodation is a 20 minute walk is not right", and we left abruptly. What's a little white lie to a tourist matter to gain a night's accommodation payment. Well, these tourists don't accept it, so back to just outside old town we went. Yes, pricier, but much nicer, and a perfect base for the next few days.
